How to change your life

Everyone has dreams and aspirations.
Whether it be a career, way of life, or country we long for.
But we can’t feasibly pursue all our ambitions at once.
So how do we choose?

A ‘want’ is simply a wish or desire.
We all have them, but too many cause decision fatigue, meaning nothing gets done.
A ‘need’, on the other hand, is something we’re forced to do.
It’s a responsibility we take on, and typically there’s consequences if we fail.

Many wish for a different life, but few need that change.
If one lives comfortably and free of responsibility, the consequences of remaining the same are nil.
In fact, you may stand to lose more by changing.
So why risk it all for an unsure thing, right?

Those who need change, however, find the real risk in life is not change, but remaining the same.
Dreaming about how we’ll make that ‘big change’ in 5 years comforts our imagination, making us complacent today.
But it’s not until that opportunity is no longer available to us, that it leads to a reality of regret.
And staring down a life of this same routine – it’s easy to see how it ends.

Making a change in your life is less about what you want, and more what you don’t.
We all have wants and dreams, but we’re no worse off if we don’t pursue them.
It’s only when we will be worse off that we feel forced to act.
So if you want to change your life, simply ask “who will I become if I don’t change?”
Your answer will either be the first, or last step you make on that journey.
